Rear End Modifications

This page contains information on how I setup a 460 rearend!
The information contained here is just one of many setup configurations for the 460 Big Block. I have talked to several people concerning the use of the IRS rearend for the 460. The consensus was that they feel it couldn't handle the torque. I might break under the load.

Stock 8.8 housing from an 88 Mustang!
The housing may be stock, but nothing is stock about the internals. I used an Auburn HD 31 splined carrier. 31 splined axles with heavier than stock 4 lugs. The gear ratio is 3.27:1. I wouldn't go much more than that. The engine has a lot of torque. Stock drum brakes, although recommend using disk if you are going the track route. Aluminum differential cover from SVO. Blue anodized Heim bushings from John Lisman. Special c-clips to elminate the slop in the axles. Mystic gear oil.

Heim Installation
The Heim bushing installs easily without any special tools. Make sure the surface on the axle is free of burrs and paint. It should be a slight press fit and held in place with a snap ring. This is a very slick installation and looks nice too. These bushings should reduce binding that would be found in the stock arms.

Por-15 Paint --- The best!

John Lisman's Heim Bushing
You can see the quality in these bushings. Aircraft grade blue anodized aluminum with snap rings to hold them in place. Very nice. Too bad no one will see them! Note the braided brake line.

Looks like new thanks to POR-15
